Multiple Ad Units

Another effective way to increase ad revenue is to use multiple ad units. Google allows you to post up to three ad units per page. The highest paying ad units will be served first and the lowest are served last. If there is a big enough range of ads available, place all three ad units. However  if a the third ad unit is only paying between 3 to 5 cents you may want to omit it from your page. Note that it is estimated that you get 60% of the revenue – so a 5c click will yield you somewhere around 3c.

Affiliate Site

Putting Adsense on an affiliate site needs to be weighed up. Are you giving up a $20 affiliate sale for a $1 click? Perhaps if your affiliate sales aren’t converting it may be worth a try but generally you should be focused on one or the other. Google Adsense works better on my article pages. So if you had an affiliate website where you sold razors some of your pages will probably have content which is a general article about shaving. Putting some adsense on these general pages may well increase the income that the site is getting without detracting from affiliate sales. If you have pages that are getting more than 50 clicks per month then more pages about the topic of that page is probably a good idea.

PPC Arbitrage

I’m not going to explain the concept exactly but I bring this topic up because you may come across it as a way to make a killing by some internet marketing guru.

I suggest you steer clear for two reasons. Firstly Google doesn’t like it and you don’t want to jeopardise having your whole Google Adsense account suspended just for the sake of “trying something out” on one site. Secondly, if you don’t know exactly what you are doing it can end up costing you money, sometimes a lot. So my suggestion is just stick to good content that gives value to the visitor with some well placed ads that don’t take over the page.

Effective Google Adsense

If you’re trying to earn a $100 a day from using Google Adsense, then you will fall into one of two broad categories:

• Publish 100 websites that each earn $1 a day profit
• Publish 1 website that earns $100 a day profit

Of course, 100 websites requires a lot of  maintenance and management. Having one website leaves you at the mercy of Google’s changes in search engines algorithms, as well as better marketers entering your market and taking your market share.

What Niche should I target?

When you start out with an adsense website, try to make the topis something you enjoy. That way it will be easier and more interesting for you to write content. Of course the topic needs to have a reasonable range of ads available with a payout level you are comfortable with. You may love underwater knitting, but there are no ads for that subject so you’ll have to come up with something else that you are interested in.

Once you’re up and running, you are going to want to dabble in some high paying keywords. The first problem is that  the level of fraud is much higher on the big money keywords. Secondly everyone wants ads on their website that make big bucks per click, but  the number of advertisers who are willing to pay big bucks decreases as the price per click goes up. So the key is to come up with a balance of the highest dollar value per click that has a big enough range of ads.

As you build your site it’s usually a good idea not to  put adsense on it until it’s finished. Actually, it’s probably a good idea not to  put adsense on it until you have some inbound links and you’re getting some traffic. This makes the whole site look more of an attempt at genuine content with adsense being an afterthought rather than an obvious internet marketing attempt.

Site Design

Where’s the best place to put your Google Adsense ads? Generally the best spots are middle of the page and left hand side however sometimes the right hand side can be effective. Testing placement of ads is a good idea and you may well find that different areas work better for different topics. Testing is a vital part of the game when you are trying to make money with adsense. Google has published some heat maps showing optimal locations and you can have a look at them by link clicking here

You will find that you will have to devote some space in the centre above the fold to advertising.  If you want your ads to be clicked on you will need put them where people can see them. Now, this doesn’t mean that all the visitor sees is ads. There should always be much more content than ads. But you will need to position the ads where they can be seen or they won’t get clicked – just common sense.

Google has also has published a list of the highest performing ad sizes:

• 336×280 large rectangle
• 300×250 inline rectangle
• 160×600 wide skyscraper

One trick that can work is to blend your adsense into your body copy. For example if your body copy is blue, remove the adsense border and make the title, text, and URL blue. You can also try changing all of your hyperlinks to a contrasting colour ie red and then change the adsense title to that same colour.
